People Living With Cancer

About the Practice

On the Leading Edge of Treatment Advances

At the same time that MUSTOP is striving to keep you or your loved one close to home during treatment, the MUSTOP team of professionals is searching the globe for the latest state-of-the-art cancer care techniques, and is pioneering research to uncover new treatments. Recent advances have greatly improved outcomes for children and adults affected by bone and soft-tissue tumors.

For example, patients who would have had a limited life expectancy in the past are now being successfully managed on an ongoing basis and are living productive lives. New limb-sparing procedures are dramatically reducing the need for amputation. Biological substitutes are being used for grafting bone and tissue. Also, the introduction of the expandable prosthesis—a man-made limb that “grows” as a child grows—overcomes the problem of future leg length shortening by serial
lengthening of the prosthesis. This allows the child to return to daily activities.

The Power of A Physician with a Mission
Guided by Professor Kenan, MUSTOP has developed a mission that focuses on ways the practice can improve service to patients. In addition to providing “effective…efficient …accessible” care and leading the way in research, the MUSTOP mission includes:

• Provide the highest quality care by using a team of specialists
Treatment is carefully coordinated among a team of experts, including radiologists, oncologists, nuclear medicine specialists, neurological surgeons, plastic surgeons, physical therapists, and more.

• Optimize every patient’s experience
Because each patient is different, no single treatment approach is right for every patient. MUSTOP individualizes treatment based on individual diagnosis, tumor location, extent of disease, age, and so on.

• Educate patients
In addition to providing educational materials and ongoing patient-physician dialogue, MUSTOP has established a website with information just for patients and their families (www.orthotumormd.com).

• Reach out to the community
MUSTOP wants to expand its role as a positive part of New York communities through outreach and education. Professor Kenan has carefully crafted the practice’s mission so that each part—superior service, access to care, teamwork, education, research, and outreach—leads to improved care for MUSTOP patients. In turn, Professor Kenan is confident that MUSTOP will become the largest, as well as the finest, tumor service provider in the New York area.
